Lug nut type

Hello all,

Question about lug nuts and aluminum wheels.  Is there any practical difference 
between the acorn type and the shank
(w/washer) type, assuming the studs are long enough? 

A buddy of mine had a problem with his lug nuts getting loose that went away 
when he switched to acorn type wheels.
Anybody else had this problem?
