Oil

Would someone e kind enough to suggest which multiweight oil should I be 
using for the car (69' SRL311)?  A friend told me I should use 20w-50 during 
the summer, and 5w-30 during the winter.  An old mechanic recommended 10w-40 
(which is what I have in there right now).
I haven't found any documentation online suggesting one weight over another.
