Dan,
I found the easiest way was to, believe it or not, remove the intake and
exhaust manifolds (or header in my case). Without taking the header off, I
cannot remove the starter.
Best of luck,

Any suggestions on what's the best way to get at the starter on a 2000 for
removal / replacement?
