Hi Linda,
Be careful draining it. And, don't do it inside a building! Gas fumes will
lay on the floor and get into places they shouldn't.
Remove the filler neck & hose. In the middle of the trunk is a small,
rectangular panel. Under it you will find the level sender and vent hose
attachment. Remove the wires and vent hose. The vent is (or more likely,
was) clear tubing. If it is original, it will most likely be yellow and
hard as a brick!
Get the car up on jack stands and place your floor jack under the tank.
Gently raise it until it just touches the bottom of the tank more or less in
the center. Located at the front of the tank are the supply and return
lines. Removing these can be quite a job. (See my write up at
http://home.texoma.net/~sitsinwest/fred.htm for an in-depth discussion of
this operation) They are steel fittings and have a bad habit of rusting
into place. It is entirely possible that they will break. DO NOT go near
them with a torch. There is nothing in the automotive world more dangerous
than an empty gas tank. Once these are disconnected, remove the strap bolts
located at the front of the tank and lower the jack. The back of the straps
are held in place by 'L' shaped bolts that hook in channels under the trunk
floor. Give these channels a good inspection as they tend to crack from the
weight of the tank.
Most radiator shops no longer mess with gas tanks. I don't know if it is
EPA regulations or what but no one in my area will touch one. If you can
afford it, I recommend "Gas Tank Renu" @ http://www.gastankrenu.com/ to fix
your tank. The job they did on mine was fabulous!
