All,
I thought that once I got the body off of the frame that it would pretty
much over as far as dismantling my car was concerned.
Right.
The rear suspension was pretty easy. The drums and beakes came off easily
and it was not hard to get the axles out and the differential came out
easily. I was on a roll.
The front suspension was a whole other matter. Got the front sway bar off,
got the wheels off and took the brake calipers off. Then it came time to
remove the housing that holds the calipers to the suspension (What the hell
is that thing called anyway?) It was held on by two 3/4" bolts and I could
not break them free. Squirted enough WD-40 on them to float a battleship.
Nada. Roman Rist finally recommended that I find out if Archimedes knew what
he was talking about and get a torque wrench. I didn't own one, so I dashed
to the hardware store and got one.
Worked like a champ. OK, so now I am thinking that I am on my way, until I
notice that most of the nuts that hold the front suspension are notched to
allow cotter pins to be pushed through. Pulling out these cotter pins are
like pulling the sword out of the stone...
So my two questions: What is the size of the nut at the bottom of the
steering box? It's bigger than 1". So is the nut that holds that front wheel
assembly on- the one under the grease cap?
Grease up to my elbows,
