Howdy Roadster Fans,
I had the G Prod. 1600 race car out at Waterford Hills this past weekend.
It was hot, humid, eventful, and successful.
My carbs have never been quite up to par, so I was going to try and play
around with the setup a little. For the practice/qualifying session I tried
out some N-17 needles with the .100 jets. The car sounded absolutely sick
until I got past 6000 rpm, and then it would run decent. I was three
seconds a lap slower, but I was able to home in a little on why the car
wouldn't run past 6000 rpm with the other needle/jet setup. I qualified
18th out of 19 cars.
For the race on Saturday, I put the old .090 jets back in, and decided to
try some FX needles, which are richer in the top end than the M-39's I'd
been originally using. My lap times were back to normal, but I was also
still having the same carb problems. I passed three people on the track,
and two cars ahead of me dropped out, including the only other car in G
Production. On the last lap it started to rain, which made for some
interesting driving considering I was on full slicks!
Sunday the weather was still hot and humid. I tried playing around with
carb dashpots, but this didn't affect things. So, I'm convinced I need a
different needle profile, which I'll probably wind up making myself. I
finished the race ahead of my competition who was struggling with
overheating problems in his Fiat X1/9. I battled it out with a Spec. Racer
most of the race. I was much quicker than him through the corners and under
braking, but under power he had the advantage. That will be less of an
issue once my carbs are properly sorted out.
For the final race on Sunday, I decided to lean the carbs out a bit, to see
if that would alleviate the low rpm bogging, and to shift early to keep from
running the car too lean at top end. It was a fairly uneventful race once
we all got around the spec racer spinning in the middle of the track at the
start! Thanks to my Datsun's reliability (and the lack of my competition's
reliability), I took 1st place in class for the Feature race on Sunday.
My next race weekend will be Sept. 8-9 at Waterford Hills. Hopefully, I'll
have some time between now and then to work on my carbs. I'm planning on
installing an O2 sensor, and there's a few small things here and there that
need to be fixed.
My lap times have pretty much stabilized. In order for me to go faster I
need to fix the carbs, and get more power out of the engine.
