Hello,
Got my first issue ever of grass roots motorsports the other day.
They have a nice article about tweaking an MGB that might shed some light on
a couple of recent threads.
I don't have the article right here in front of me so I am paraphrasing.
They started with a stock MGB and did a tune up and then did a baseline runb
on a dyno. They got something really pathetic like 60rwhp. Then they added
a pertronix unit and the hp went up like 5hp then they added an MSD ignition
and it went up another couple of horse's.
They then tried several different air cleaners and found that the
less restrictive K&N gave them like 2hp. Since the MGB uses SU's they tried
messing with the mixture and found that it did not have much of a noticable
effect on hp. (I find this odd)
They then advanced the timing and found that the most hp was at a total
advance of like 30 deg.
They stopped there for lack of time but said that theywould like to
try bigger carbs and some form of cold air induction because the carbs draw
their air from the 'hot' side of the engine. They also want to try a more
freer flowing exhaust.
Now I know an MGB is no roadster but I belive these results apply
directly to our cars.
One thing that I thought was very striking was the before hp/tourque
curve was very wavy at higher rpm (almost a good sine wave) But after the
pertronix and MSD it really leveled off (at a higher lever!).
