Vacuum advance works under conditions of light throttle which also causes a
lean condition. A lean mixture is harder to light and burns a bit more
slowly than a richer one.
I suspect the Solex-kit cars (carbs and cam) can get away with the increased
initial advance because the longer cam duration reduces volumetric
efficiency at low rpm.

Why does the U20 with a solex setup use a distributor with no vacuum
advance? Is it because static timing is set to 20 degrees? I would think
that it could still benefit from more advance at high rpms. Gordon?
