The issue isn't so much ring size as piston-to-wall clearance. Standard
clearance is around .0020-.0025, so having .0035 taper on top of the
clearance would be way too much. Go with the overbore.

Subject: Fw: Engine block bore
Hey gang,
Back from a few months of absence when we relocated from one end of the
country to the other- but the old '68 1600 came with us --- in many, many
parts. I'm now getting the engine block machined and the shop came back to
me
with some numbers - worst cylinder taper is 3.5 thou. The recommended
solution
was a re-bore to take +20 thou. pistons. That somehow seems excessive to me
although I have 0 experience in these matters....(what else is
new--hee,hee,hee ) For those who have dealt with such matters - does this
sound reasonable? Can +.0035 not be taken up with a different size rings
without having to go to +.020 pistons? Any help/comments would be
appreciated.
Thanks!
On a different note, I found this site when surfing around - now sure
how
good it is or anything about it, but I thought I'd pass it on to the list.
