That depends. What color is the smoke? White is water, blue-grey is oil,
dark grey or black is carbon.

Subject: Exhaust Gasket
My 2L has been blowing smoke since I replaced the head (with a used one, old
one was warped), replaced the timing chains and gears, and head and exhaust
gasket. But it was blowing smoke with the warped head too.
Anyway, on my way to replacing the head gasket; while removing the carbs,
throttle body, and manifold, I noticed that there could have been a leak
from
the throttle body water jacket and the carbs. Is this a typical source of
water leak? And could this be the source of the smoke? I have both a new
head gasket and exhaust gasket. Should I replace both or one? Should I use
any kind of gasket sealer, e.g. copper coat or tube stuff?
TIA,
John Brooks
