Hey Victor, (and list)
drying out your brake shoes might work, heck, they won't be any worse than
they were when soaked with oil!
The oil was probably thick enough that it didn't soak completely in, so a
soaking in solvent should get most of it out. (your braking heat did open
the pores somewhat, however) When you are done soaking in solvent, first
leave them in the sun to let the surface solvent flash off, then (how do you
know when, when it doesn't smell any more) put them in an oven at 120-140F
for 3-4 hours to open up the pores and flash off what is sub-terranean.
(we do this sort of thing to our carbon/carbon brake shoes, on a bit more
complex level)
If you leave solvent below the surface and then flash heat them, the surface
will explode (there is reasons they call them 'volatiles', as you know) to
release the gases. This will result in quick and un-even wear, which may
not be pretty. It may be worth trying them for a week (translate the "week
of driving" from Fergus-speeds into Victor-speeds may be necessary) and then
re-check them.
Sorry, TMI (too much info),
Fergus
