Andrew,
When an engine is spinning at 2000 rpms or more (Probably More) and a rod or
piston breaks, the resulting piece or rod left will start to spin around and
whack anything in its path. If the rod were to lodge itself on the side of the
block, brittle cast iron hit with a blow of 2000 times a minute or 33 per second
will cause a lot of damage. If the engine was running at 4000 rpms then 4000
hits per minute or 66 hits per second and more damage. If you hit the block
with a hammer 40 times a second would it cause any damage? The choices would be
rod, crank, or block. Could have been worse with more damage.
