Dearest List,
This is kind of long, so I won't be offended if you delete it...
I'm happy to report that my 67.5 1600 is back on the road!!!
About 2 months ago my 4 speed bit the dust. I knew it was coming, cause it
was grinding
when I'd shift to 3rd. At first I was going to try to rebuild the tranny
myself, but after taking off
the front cover, I chickened out, and instead I took it to a local shop.
Well, 4 weeks and $600
later, it had been rebuilt. Now I could've saved some money, if I were
DatsunMike or
Born-Again-Grease-Monkey-From-Beyond, but it was over my head.
Other things I got done:
- New clutch kit (Plate, Disk, and Bearing)
- Had the driveshaft balanced
- Cleaned up the engine bay
- Cleaned up the transmission tunnel
- Tightened up the steering, drained and refilled the steering box
- Greased the zillion and 1 zerks
- Custom fitted some new plug wires
- Added a ground strap from the starter to the frame
And to top it all off, a shiny new custom gear shift knob from Phil Hall of
SEROC fame (It glows)
Was luck on my side or what???
I took the old throwout bearing to a local machine shop to get the old one
off, and the new one
pressed on. Well, the new bearing was too big for the collar, it slid right
over it. I was bummed,
Ross had never sent me the wrong part. Since he was out of town, I went
down to the local Nissan
dealer (probably for the last time), and had them order me the "correct"
bearing, even paid them an
extra $15 to get it the next day. So, I go down to pick it up, and they
ordered the wrong part, they
ordered a collar instead of the bearing. Turns out that this collar fit the
bearing that Ross had sent
me, I had the wrong collar and bearing on all along. Ross had sent the
correct bearing and the
Nissan dealer had accidentilly got me the correct collar.
Unbelieavable! Enjoying the ride again...Robert - 67.5 1600 - Abq
