WA is not the only state to do this. Years ago ('93) when I bought a new
sportscar, Fairfax County, Virginia assessed it for "personal property tax"
purposes at more than sticker, and at almost 27% more than I paid. When I
formally protested, their response was that they rely on valuation software,
period. This of course is just dishonest, but they are stealing from you
because they can. My only consolation is that the current governor of VA was
elected on a campaign whose major platform was repeal of the hated "car tax."
I also figure that, if this is the worst the tax guys ever do to me, I'll
have been lucky.
