Last week, while I was on "honey do" vacation, I sent a note detailing my
noise in the valve train problem. To remind you, I did a complete
adjustment and ended up with a loud clack in the valve train that was not
present before.
I received several suggestions, all good, but one was correct. First I had
to build a 1x6 open ended box the size of the valve cover. I then bought
an auto stethescope at Sears. I started the engine with the wood "box" in
place and just listened to each valve until I found the greatest amount of
noise from #4 exhaust.
One of the suggestions was to look at all of the lash pads and the rocker
arms for unusual wear. I found #4 rocker to have a strange looking wear
pattern on the cam pad. It may have been swapped with another one when I
did the rebuild in 96. I have several spares from old parts boxes and I
found one that had very little wear and no piting. I replaced the bad one
and "SHAZZAM" .... very little valve noise.
Thanks for all of the suggestions.
