With the help of Victor Laury at 5,500 feet (The Mt Palomar Lodge), we
figured out the 2000 water flow. Water flows our of the left side of the
radiator into a rubber tube which tees just before the intake manifold. Some
water drops down to a hose that goes into the interior heater core (unless
turned off), while some water goes straight ahead (1) and is sucked into the
manifold and then into the block (on both the SU and Solex). If the heater
is on, the returning water comes in from heater core and into the manifold
and the block in the other direction from the water from the radiator
(opposite of the (1) direction), mixing with all the other water from the
block and then returning to the radiator.
What this means is that if you want to block off the heater, be sure to keep
a flow from the radiator into the manifold, although the passenger end outlet
from the manifold can be blocked off with no ill effect beyond having no
heater.
It appears to me that the 1600 has a dedicated return loop for the heater
line, and may not depend on the water flowing through the manifold into the
block at all (I don't even recall seeing water holes in the 1600 intake
manifold.
