Taro,
If you do not have the money for magnafluxing the head, I would suggest
swapping the spare engine into the car. Pull the valve cover off to see
what kind of shape the internals look like - you can probably guess what the
general condition of the motor is based on that. You would not be able to
save the head gasket if you pulled the head - it would be shot as soon as
you disassembled the motor.
A side benefit of the above is that you can work on the header/starter
problem. You may have to cut off the head pipe and have it rewelded later
though based on the notes that you have given.
