I think I got it. The spitting sputtering and backfiring that appeared only after the engine had warmed up for 20-25 minutes was finally traced to a worn distributor. (Oddly enough it went away when the voltage regulator was disconnected.) With helpful suggestions from Bill Hatfield, John Brasfield and Christian Schauff, plus a distributor rebuild kit from Rallye, the gremlin went away, and the R16 performs better than ever.
