halogen lights

I know there have been a number of threads on this subject but most
involved lights that drew a lot more amps than stock and required relays etc.

I would like to put halogen lamps in my 68 2000 but would like to just plug
in the new ones without relays or any wireing changes.

Is that possible and what limitations are there as far as  wattage etc?  Is
there a standard lamp I can buy from a regular auto parts store?
