Hi Hoon-
Notwithstanding other facts (like the head was just redone), chances are if
the guide seals are going, going, gone, the guides themselves are too, as
well as the seats. IOW, the whole head is probably ready for refreshing;
it's much easier to change valve guide seals with the head off, even on an
OHV engine.
It's possible to do it with the head on, though - you'll need a couple of
special tools: Air compressor, valve spring compressor. It's theoretically
possible to get by with hand tools, but I wouldn't suggest it.
Start by removing the rocker gear - I have little experience with R16's, so
YMMV on the exact procedure here... what follows is the generic process...
You need to pump up the cylinder with air pressure, you'll need an air line
fitting that screws into the sparkplug hole, to keep the valve from
falling in when you remove the locks/keeper/spring. The spring compressor
squishes down the spring without pushing down the valve itself. You can
then extract the locks (lox? ;-) and keeper. Then remove the valve spring
compressor and pull the spring off. You'll see the guide seal sitting on
top of the valve guide, on the valve stem. Hopefully the valve is staying
put with the air pressure, but it *might* be hanging on by the valve guide
seal. So be alert when you remove the seal! Then put the new one on,
and carefully install and compress the spring, put the keeper and locks
back on.
A thought - it might be quite advantageous to do two cylinders at a time,
making sure that they are both at TDC - that way, if (when?) you drop a
valve, it won't drop all the way into the cylinder. Seems workable - you
might even be able to get by without the air compressor. But again, YMMV!
And, again... chances are the head's ready to come off for freshening
anyway.
