Paul and those putting an Delco or Rayloc 60 amp self exciting
alternator in a 1600. First thank you all again for the input on how to
get this combo to work. In one of my last posts I said the conversion
seemed to finally be working as per Thomas Walter's instructions. Well,
that night the 1600 made a liar out of me and left my son Sean with a
dead battery. Today using some of Paul's and Thomas Walter's
instructions, I got a definite charge on the amp meter using a 60 amp,
self exciting, single wire (HA) self regulating GM alternator. I have
been working on this thing for over a month! but victory is ours! I
wanted the 60 amp alternator as above. The GM/Delco number is 11 00
111. Kragen, Napa, Rayloc whoever, can cross reference off this number.
I bought a GM alternator plug at Kragen's, "CALTERM" part 08602. I ran
a 30 amp 12 gauge fused wire from the big "Battery" post on the back of
the Alt to the POSITIVE post on the battery. I ran a 12 gauge wire from
the alt body to the NEG post on the battery. I installed the GM Alt plug
in the ALt. I ran a 30 amp fused wire from the RED wire of the GM
alternator plug to the old wire that connected to the big post on the
back of the stock alternator. I ran a 16 gauge wire from the white wire
on the GM alternator plug to the power wire for the radio. The reason
for this is that the alternator needs to know when it needs to turn on
and off. The power wire to the radio turns off and on with the ignition
switch. Also I moved the alternator to the right side of the engine. I
started the car, goosed the gas to go over 2500 rpm and bam, big time
charge!! I turned on the high beams, fan to high, wiper blades to fast
and still reading POSITIVE CHARGE!!! FINALLY!!!
