>What's the spacer block, for the water pump on a '68 1600, made of?
It is an aluminum plate. Most like it is not cracked, but
corroded enough to leak water.
You can also take your aluminum spacer into a machine
shop and ask about having it welded back up, and remachined.
Another common, but hard to spot, leak is around the large
water pump stud. This is the 10mm stud which threads into a
water passage on the block. I have seen the back of the
stud corroded enough to leak water. The water seepage then
fools you into thinking it is a bad water pump.
Either way you will need to remove the radiator & water
pump to inspect everything. Fixing it now is much cheaper
than replacing a cylinder head later on!
Cheers,
Tom
