I'd take the canada rt 17 to the us border fromthere head s/w to the bad
lands of south dakota, and mt rushmore, then west to yellowstone park then
south thought the grand tetons , then south to saltlake city, then south
down utah thought the canyon lands Rt 89 will take you to the grand canyon
then west to las vegas, from there to death valley and then head N/W up 395
and then east on 120 though yosemity nation park, then south thought the red
woods forest... that should cover most of the 3 weeks you have ....
as for the Highway patrol get a good radar detector .... but going though
canada you will miss the mid west states and they are a bore anyways ,
driving though nebraska or kansas sucks 6 hours of flat driving till you go
cross eyed....
