Hi There Your Name John,

When you say "idle screw" are you referring to the large jet adjustment
nut
on the underside of the carb which determines the jet position?
If so, this means that the jet and the needle are out of alignment. 
Aligning
it properly is quite difficult with it on the car, but not too tough on
the bench.
Problem is the condition you described often wears/bends the needle or
wears the jet(nozzle).
With the damper out, and the nut screwed all the way up, the piston
should drop freely.
