Yes. Quite a popular option here in Texas.
On fellow had his mounted on the side where the airpump would
have gone (distributor side of the engine).
The evaporator and blower were mounted in the trunk. While it
was great as the passanger still had plenty of room, and when
the top was down it covered up the AC vents, leaving the roadster
looking stock. Only down side it the dry air blowing over your
skin from front vents is a little more effective, than a rear
mounted unit. The again, roadster has little air space... so it
cooled quickly.
On the '68-70, I'd be tempted to look at the custom units that
replace both the heater & a/c into one combined unit. Here in
Texas during the winter I like both heat & a/c on to help dry
out my Maxima pretty fast (steamed up windows are a pain, especially
with my 95# rotty along for the ride!).
Hmm, I really should A/C my roadster... usually it is parked from
May until November (too hot in Texas!).
