I remember a few rears ago watching a special on tv run by the California
Highway
Patrol about this issue. All theories aside, the CHP could not make an abs
braked
vehicle stop faster than a non abs vehicle on dry pavement. It seemed the
fastest
stops were done by "jumping" on the brakes hard, and skidding. As for my
personal
experience, I drive an ABS vehicle daily, a mail truck, and I couldn't begin to
tell you how aften I have almost had an accident because my vehicle just won't
stop, especially at 20 and under speeds. The worst is when you just start to
take
off and somebody pulls in front of you. I'll bet it takes me 20 feet to stop
after
I hit the brake pedal, when I am going under 10 mph! Another fact is that
insurance companies are considering raising the rates, if they haven't already,
for
Ahhhh Boutaaa Stop cars, because they are in more accidents then identical non
abs
cars. As for the slippery hot rubber, ever drive a car with hot racing
rubber?
Way more traction! You can see lose pebbles stuck to the tires. All this to
say,
give me a non abs car every time. Take your car out on some out of the way
place
and run it through a few panic stops. You can learn to keep it right on the
edge
of skidding, thus keeping steerability when needed too. The best way to stop.
Just my two pesos.
