Erf,  welcome to the wonders of small problems...
        This is a metallurgy problem (the gears wore themselves out on each
other(think about it!)) and so far the only fix is to get a late (like,
'70) speedo with different (plastic, I think) gears, (the ones that
drive the odometer) (the first, 90' gear is the one that goes) (it
attaches to the speedo input shaft hub) (ack!)  
        So far (afaik) noone has reproduced (or redesigned) a replacement
(altho I would buy 2) so if anyone knows of another fix (like, 510
speedo parts, or something off an Olivetti typrwriter) please share!
