What are you building? ;-)

On the alternator, it will work if is backwards. 
Only "counter rotating" engine I can think of at
the moment is HONDA.  Did you get an alternator from
a honda?

For those electrical/electronic folks on the list:
Alternators have slip rings.  The answer is different
if there are commutator bars. ;-)
