Ewwww,
The later cars don't have separate shifter rods- that's done on the
tail housing of the tranny. The earlier ones had a top housing, but I
didn't think you could get it off with the tranny in the car (unlike
some Triumph products).
However, it might be worth a look down past the shift lever- there is a
pin that can come loose, also the shifter 'base' could have broken (it's
pretty tough, but who knows?) or bent. Maybe creative use of vice-grips
could get you home?
Unfortunately, everything else is buried in the tranny, and there are a
couple of roll pins that would ruin your day if they sheared..
Not to be too pessimistic...
