Hi John,
I just noticed John Stromgren's note that Tom's tips are on his website. I
just rebuilt my brakes so the info is fresh in my mind. Let me add that
almost everything I know about Datsun brakes were learned from Tom Walter
and his excellent notes.
The following is what I have determined from working on my late model roadsters
(1968-1970). There's a pair of shoes for each rear wheel. They may or may not be
identical. What is important is that the shoe having the rectangular hole, is
positioned with that rectangular hole at the bottom so that the emergency brake
lever part sticks through that hole. Also important is that the opposing shoe
has the pad material 180 degrees opposite, so there is an equal gap at top and
bottom. It helps to completely back off the adjustor screw (CCW) to make it
easier on the installation.
The single spring (often a green color) goes at the top near the adjustor pivot
through the round holes in the shoes, from behind the shoe plates. The double
spring goes at the bottom round holes from behind. The double spring sits just
above the slave cylinder. I first install the rectangular hole shoe with the
springs in place. Then I position the 2nd shoe with the ends sticking out 90
degrees towards me, insert the spring ends into the round holes, and turn the
2nd shoe into it's final position.
Hope this helps. As I said, this is for my late model roadsters. I'm going to
check out my '66 soon for comparison purposes.

I have a rule about replacing parts. If there are 2 to do, only do one at
a time so you can look at the other as referance.
Well, I broke my rule while doing the rear brakes and I cant tell from
the pics in the shop manual where the shoe with the less material goes. Is
it front or back and is the exposed metal part of the shoe at the top or
bottom?
Also, one other question. Where is the Roadster Home Page now? I know
someone else took it over but I lost track. If I knew that I would have
looked up tom's faq on this first.
Thanks folks
