It originated in Italy, their version of the 500cc m/cycle engined F3.
Became an International formula in about 1959, and was then dominated
by the Lotus-Ford and Cooper-BMC cars.
There have been several books about F3, Bernard Cowdrey's on the Formula
in general, and the Robinshaw/Bouckley on the Lotuses that raced under
those rules (http:/clients.drakken.com/mcauser/lotus_biblio contains
both, and some other F3 books too).

There's a Junior Lotus 18 for sale in at racecars.com right now. Yes
you're right, they are pretty little cars.
