I have a 72 Europa TC Big Valve. 2 months ago I was in 2nd gear at about 3000
RPM when a loud - BANG - came from the motor. The exhaust cam broke in half
directly over the bearings and it busted all the valves and some other misc.
stuff. This is my 5th Europa and have never had this happen before. Is this
common to break the Exhaust Cam ? When disassembled, there was no evidence of
any oil starvation, bearing wear, or any other obvious cause. Maybe it was
caused by a stuck valve. There was some valve seat wear but nothing excessive.
Also, I use Mobil-1 15w-50 which is changed religiously.
In the re-build I kept the stronbergs but used a SE-2 exhaust cam and enlarged
the exhaust valves to 36mm (1.41), replaced valves, guides, seats, cam buckets,
etc.. The engine also has headers and a stainless exhaust , plus a solid state
ignition. This thing really flys now.
