According to my shop manual, suffix 'M' is an export +2 S version and
suffix 'N' is an export "Federal" (US) +2 S version. The first four
characters are indeed year and month, with the next two characters being
the production batch. The next four is the chassis number. Starting in
1972, the production batch number was no longer used.
