I never had a problem with breaking one [70 +2 +135K miles], but I did
lose the outer bearing area, which I assume was merely beat to death by
poor tolerancing/bad material/what have you. I replaced it with a new
high tech steel one. I was told years ago that they failed where the pin
ends in the groove, and if you radius the edge there it would make it
last longer.
