OK, now the Starlet project is (almost) over, I am back onto the Blown
4AGZE Anglia club car. I am about to build the front suspension - it seems
most of it will be custom/radically modified. Present plan is Capri struts,
toyota cartrdges, roller tops, maybe fabricated TCAs, rose jointed tie bars
and adjustable sway bar. Not to mention Rack and pinion steering. I think I
will have to build by own strut tops to get sufficient adjustment to run
enuff camber - at present to get the wheels in the guards it has about 1/2
degree postive, and I need to pull the strut top in about 20mm to get it to
about 2 degrees negative - there is not enuff room for full size strut
tops. I will also go to adjustable spring platforms. Questions I have are
as follows:
How much suspension travel do I need? Can I get away with three inches
bounce on a road/track/smooth gravel car? If I get the car as low as I
would like, then this is about all I can have. What do you guys run? It is
MacPherson strut.
What front /rear roll centre height should I aim for? I can get the back
roll centre as low as I like (woblink). I am aiming for about 4 inches
ground clearance, with the engine as low as possible (fabricated subframe)
- sump shortening is a distinct possibility - to get CG as low as possible.
What front geometry to aim for - specifically camber and castor - is 2
degrees negative too much camber?
Then there is anti-dive - should I bother with any? - lots of conflicting
views.
Slip angle/scrub radius/backspacing - a reduced scrub radius will assist in
getting the tyres under the guards, but will reduce load and feel on
steering wheel.
Finally there is ackerman angle - I have some references saying run none as
tyre scrub masks it, with others saying run 50-75% ackerman - does this
mean intersects are behind the diff or in front?
Comments please!
