In the old days, the advance mechanisms is distributors
were set up for full vacuum at idle, and then that would drop
as the RPM went up and the mechanical advance would take over.
Early carbs had no 'ported' vacuum sources.
Often we would pin the vacuum advance plate in the dist.
and alter the mechanical advance to come in quicker and further.
Over here adjustable advance curve kits are available through several
speed & high performance outlets.
What dist. are you using ? Vacuum advance can be helpful
on street applications, but it's not necessary for race setups.
Later Buick HEI dists. ( from a 340 V8 ) can be used too,
although they need a bit of clearance at the front intake manifold bolt.
The trick here is to use a 'button' bolt as Buick did on the V6 with HEI
