Yeah, the "flaming drill of Death" syndrome. 1/4" and light-duty 3/8"
drills really aren't designed for full load for more than a few seconds.
You can prime in short bursts until the drill gets hot; let it cool,
prime some more, etc. When the oilways are all full, the pressure will
come up almost immediately when you start turning the shaft.

Yep. That's the oil pressure bypass valve you're feeling, bleeding
excess pressure.
