Dave,
Yes, the TR7 box is the same Rover LT77 5 speed that's used in
the Rover sedans and TR8's but with a different bellhousing and
gearshift extension housing. You'll need the TR8 bellhousing
(Rover tranny won't bolt to a GM style bellhousing) but most don't
bother with the slightly different shifter location of the TR7 versus
TR8. Get the fork and associated bits with the TR8 bellhousing.
The TR7 stuff can also be made to work but you'll need to have a
spacer machined. Also, you'll need a custom sized pilot bushing.
The outer diameter (as determined by the hole in the Buick 215
crank) is different than that of the Rover crank and the inner diameter
(as determined by the input shaft of the Rover tranny) is different
than that of GM trannys. I had a couple made by a local machinist,
using oil-lite bronze. I bought GM and Rover pilot bushings and told
him I needed the OD of one and the ID of the other. Depending upon
what flywheel you use (Rover or GM), you may need to have it re-drilled
for the pressure plate/clutch combo. I used a TR8 flywheel, pressure
plate, and clutch.
Your other option is a GM bellhousing and T5 tranny (GM version or
Ford plus D&D adapter).
