Yeah, I hate to say it, but lode brings up a good point. During my trip to
the UK in 1997, it appeared that we were paying about 4 times what gas costs
in the US. I came back home with a more balanced view, having to recognize
that we Americans can be real energy hogs.
We buy ever more bloated SUVs and 4WD pickups (that are never used off
road), and we put up with gas mileage in the teens. And then we whine when
gas prices go up a few cents. We seem to think it's our God-given right to
use more energy per capita than anyone else in the world.
Makes me embarassed to be an American.
