Hello.
Every time I sell a Jag, I swear I'll never buy another ... however
... it's been 6 months since I sold the XK-E so maybe it's time for
another. (Or this will be your chance to talk me out of it.)
I'm considering buying a 1994 Jag XJ12 saloon. Very clean car.
78,xxx miles and I've reviewed the service history for the past year:
nothing major and nothing over $450. Probably $800 for the last year
which represented the work the dealership did prepping the car for
sale. No history before a year ago although I can (and will) talk
to the previous owner.
I know the V12s can be temperamental engines, at least that's what
I've heard of them. I think Jag stopped using them in 1996 so I'm
wondering what they were like at the end of their life (the 6.0L
301bhp version)? Can I expect a lot of trouble? Expensive tune-ups?
Or pretty typical issues (sensors, etc)? Transmission reliability
OK? I drove it and it was quite snappy and direct feeling with it's
shifts.
When I asked the dealer what typically fails on this type of car, he
said the engine and tranny probably won't give any trouble. What
would fail would be the window lifts, little motors (in other words,
typical British electrics). Is that other owners' experiences as
well?
Does anyone have a high mileage one? >150,000. How are the cars
over the long haul? Do the bodies get a lot of creaks and rattles
and everything start to break?
I live in road-salt heaven, Minnesota. The dealer said all Jags post
1988 are galvanized so I'm not too worried about that although it
probably wouldn't be a daily driver in the winter anyway.
Thanks for reading my long message. Please contribute any comments
back to me ... also, if there is a Jag-only list, could someone
forward this on for me? I don't want to join a list for the purpose
of asking a single question. Thank you.
Cheers,
Carl
P.S. Lew Palmer, I don't want to hear from you -- I already know
what you'll say. ;^)
