For a few years now I've had the idea of offering a mail-order distributor
rebuild and recurving service. The rebuild bit is no problem, even welding
broken distributor bodies, but the recurve thing has a wee bit of a hurdle
in the way: springs. I got a quote today from a spring manufacturer to
supply a selection of the springs used in Lucas distributors and I don't
like the price. To get the unit price to a reasonable level I need to order
1000 of each rate, and there are a LOT of different spring rates in the
entire range so it means a serious outlay of cash before I could offer the
service.
So, just to test the waters, what's the market likely to be? How many
people do you figger would send their distributor out for a comprehensive
rebuild and/or recurve? The recurve would be either to factory spec or a
change to whatever curve the customer desires. More advance, less advance,
faster or slower - with a selection of springs, cams and my Sun distributor
machine, I can do it all.
Since I'd be doing this in my home shop, the price would be very
reasonable, just guessing at the moment, but $50 CDN for a recurve and a
rebuild for $100 plus parts.
If I sense a good market, I'll take the plunge and order the various
springs I need for a complete selection, otherwise I'll just find something
else to occupy my time, as if there aren't enough jobs!!
