Fellow SOL,
Just a few comments from a long time MGA driver/owner. Have had a 1959 MGA
1500 roadster since 1962 and a 1959 MGA 1600 coupe since 1988. The roadster is
on the road and the coupe is a vintage racer with the VSCCA at Lime Rock CT.
A few years after I had the roadster it came down with the typical fuel and
electical problems. The local MG dealer Gordie Morris of -naturally- Morris
Garage in Maryland NY had a number of fixes that I still use today. Both cars
are trouble free and the roadster is a summer traveler. It has been to the top
of Mt. Washington NH, highest point in the east, and has traveled the Skyline
Drive in VA.
The fixes are:
A) Clean all ground connections, especially the one in the rear. They are
exposed to the elements.
B) Check the bullet harness connectors, All are exposed and subject to
corrosion.
C) Install a ground wire from the fuel pump to the frame.
D) The battery terminals were coated with petroleum jelly to prevent
corrosion.
E) Install an inline fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump to
trap any dirt that would hang up the valves in the pump, a major cause of pump
failure.
He also switched me to negative ground so I could use a US radio. This was in
1964 and I check A to Eeach year for a trouble free drive.
