Cars must be classed by their most competitive configuration. If an
option package makes a significant difference in the competitiveness of
the car, then it must be considered.
While I don't support creating a class for every model variation, rare
homologation specials should not be classed with their more commonplace
brethren.
How does one identify "rare homologation" specials? For rare, I'd say
less than 200 produced in a year (of course this includes the ACR
package, the 1LE, and the M030 :-). But the homologation aspect needs to be
considered also -- I don't propose reclassing the rare Chevy Cavalier Indy
Pace Car Special for its trick decal package and "unique turbo-look
wheels".
The alternatives to reclassification, exclusion of certain option
packages (as models like the Cobra R are now) or ignoring their significance
(lumping all Neons into D Stock), seem less desirable to me.
