Hi all,

Earlier this year I posted a note about my MG-TC developing
the shakes after the engine was rebuilt. The problem was that
after the rebuild the car would run just fine except that once
in a while after shifting into high (fourth) I would feel this
shaking in the whole car. It was similiar to the feeling you get
when a tire is flat. Just engaging and disengaging the cluth
would make the problem go away.

Well, I finally found the problem! I received a number of good
ideas which fortunately were not the problem since they would
involve removing the engine again. The real problem was just
a bad front u-joint.

I had thought about the u-joints but when I had the car up in
the air I could feel no play or looseness in the joints. There
was no noticible noise (clicking or crunching) or anything
odd around the driveshaft. I decided to drop the driveshaft
and only then did the front joint seem wierd. If you grabbed
the front flange you could "wobble" the flange a little.

One new u-joint and a 100 mile trip yesterday proved that
all is well and that the TC is BACK! I'm now thinking that the
violent shaking that came with the broken crankshaft may have
damaged the old u-joint. Breaking a crank at 65mph is
something I don't want to do again, especially in a TC.

If there is a moral here is that I guess you can't trust a
u-joint just because you can't feel any play when everything
is connected.

Anyone going to the MG museum gathering next Sunday; October 9?
I'll be there with a green '46 MG-TC (that doesn't shake).

Regards, Dave
