Subject: Sand blast vs. Chemical dip question
Greetings,
I am a recent Internet (and SOL) newcomer. This summer I swapped a motorcycle
for a 67 MGB. The PO did some sloppy work. Anyhow, it needs new center, lower
and outer rockers as well as some rust repair under the front fenders (upper
rails, trumpets, dashboard walls,etc.). The PO also replaced the floors with
what appears to be 1/4 " steel plate finished with fiberglass matting to blend
into the adjoining panels. I have removed the drivetrain, all suspension, and
outer sheet metal (doors, hood, front fenders, etc). Yes I am crazy, but I am
in
no hurry to complete the project and I really wanted to see what was left to
work with. Why do people put brand new fenders on over a rusted out hulk ?
Why
rocker covers over nothing but a few threads of rotted metal ? Steel plating
for floors ? Sheesh, new metal floors are only about $40.00 apiece.
Right now though I am considering whether or not to blast off the old rust and
paint (one coat of original green, one coat of yucchy creamy yellow), or dip
the
whole shell in some type of chemical bath. Sand blasting I have done and could
do. It's nasty business though and I would rather pay someone else to do it.
Also removes metal and leaves residue (sandy grit) in all the nooks and
crannies
which never seem to get removed. Have one estimate for 300-400 dollars to do
whole shell and panels. Conversely chemical dips (I have been told) damage the
metal very little, but will also remove sealing stuff deep inside where you
can't get to to replace. Have no idea what it costs either. I would
appreciate
any and all comments or experiences. Thanks in advance and hope I haven't
blathered on too long or offended anyone.
