Hi there,
I've been involved in two GT6/Spitfire conversions. One
was a plain drivetrain swap into a '75 Spit, the other was a
body swap ('81 Spit body onto '71 GT6+ frame).
Both did improve the speed and performance of the vehicle, although
understeer is a problem with that lunk of iron in the nose.
The drivetrain swap was by far the easiest and fastest. We changed
only (!) the engine, gearbox, and cooling system - everything else
worked fine from the Spitfire (even the diff!)
The body swap was done as a pseudo frame-off restoration. The hard
part was to clean up the Spitfire body shell, and mix and match Spit
and GT6 parts. On the other hand, I think teh body swap handled
better because I retained the GT6+ rear suspension.
I have also seen a Buick/Rover V8 planted into the front of a
Spitfire. I wasn't around for the work, but he used all sorts of
strange parts (left exhaust manifold from one car, right from another),
completely redesigned the rear end (no more quasi-IRS), and had to
modify the interior and firewall somewhat. A lot of work, but it
sure WENT.
Send me a note if you need some more into or long-distance support.
