<My late MGB splutters and dies>
This sure sounds like a problem I experianced a while back...
The culpret turned out to be the gas line filter.
It was so clogged with junk that the pump could only force enough gas
through to sustain the engine at or just above idle. When I stepped
on the gas, in gear, the engine would sputter and die. I could only
drive about 25 yards at a shot, before the engine would cut out.
The frustrating thing was that the engine would always restart, because
when the engine stalled the demand for gas was gone and the pump would
prime the carb ready to start again. The cure was to replace the "metal"
gas line filter with the after market "see through" type so I can now
see the gas flow through the filter.
