I had a similar problem on my 79 Midget. I had replaced the Lucas
electronic ignition with the Crane Cams one. After several years of
operation several of the wire threads for the electronic pick-up in the
distributor started to break (due its moving back and forth during the
advance/retard cycle). Everytime I accelerated it would start to die (the
wire would streach some would lose contact) when at low revs it would run
fine (the retardation would push all the wire back together). I replace
the pick-up and it runs fine.
