According to the book "Rebirth of the Sports Car: Mazda MX-5" which was
authored by two members of the original design team has a slew of pictures
from 1982-1987 of various prototype Miata's side by side with a white 1972
Triumph Spitfire. They also did many comparisons of things like power-weight
ratios, shift points/changes, wheelbase, height, width, etc with cars like
1967 Lotus Elan, 1981 Lotus Esprit, 1968 Datsun 2000, 1983 Rx7, 1968 MGB,
1981 Toyota Corolla GTS, and a 1971 Datsun 240Z.
The book offers an interesting view of how a modern company goes about
designing a new model. Of course it is M**t* centric, so the lbc content is
rather low (beyond the pictures of the spitfire that is)....
