Shawn Moe recently asked what tire sizes work well on MGB 14" wires. I
have two MGBs, a '77 roadster and a '73 GT, and each of them has
different size tires. The roadster has 185/70R14 Continentals on the
front and 185R14 Michelins on the rear. Although the tires on the front
can "roll" under in hard cornering I don't recommend hard cornering with
wire wheels anyway. I have driven the car approx 30,000 miles in this
configuration and it works OK.
The GT has 175R14 Coopers on it and I think that this is the
proper size for the 4.5" wire wheel. There seems to be no "roll" under
and the car "looks" good with this size.
If spirited driving is desired I recommend a Panasport-style
wheel with center locks or, better yet, a conversion to bolt-on
Panasport-style wheels of 5.5" width with 185/70R14 tires.
